Seze and Deanna are rolling back into Rose Bar on May 7th for their monthly Kiss and Tell party. Dethlab is flying in from Detroit, and the Obscene NYC crew plans to get messy and drunk at what is currently our favorite low-key, mid-week drink session.

NIN Gives Us The Slip

Trent Reznor and company continue to kick out the jams. Today sees the release of yet another Nine Inch Nails full-length album, The Slip. This record is being given away completely free. Trent says, “thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one’s on me.”

Much like Ghosts I-IV, The Slip is available in a number of high-quality digital formats, including MP3 V0, FLAC, Apple Lossless and an insane 24-bit/96kHz WAV. Try doing that on CD! Physical CD and vinyl formats will follow for purchase in July. Last, but not least, the entire album has been released under a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial sharing and use of the material including remixes. To that end, Trent has also posted the first multi-track file off the album over at remix.nin.com.

We’ve just grabbed our copy and are halfway through our first listen. So far, we’re loving it!

Head on over to theslip.nin.com for the free download!

Who is Bozo Texino?

Bozo Texino

We first became aware of hobo and train graffiti through old interviews with Margaret Kilgallen and Barry Mcgee. One of the influences they made specific references to was Bozo Texino, a mysterious train artist who scrawled simple, intriguing messages and imagery onto railroad surfaces across America.

Bill Daniel will be screening Who is Bozo Texino, a documentary about this graffiti artist at Maysles Films on Tuesday, May 6 2008 at 7:30pm.

Human Robot Parade in Brooklyn

Robot Parade

Our friend Jack put together a robot parade on Sunday running from Park Slope to Prospect Park, Brooklyn. He wasn’t promoting, selling or marketing anything. Just for fun. It was a perfect WTF moment for a cloudy Sunday morning. More photos of the parade can be found here.

Jay Reatard Playing Bowery Ballroom & Europa

We last saw Jay at Death by Audio in October and then successfully missed all ten of his CMJ showcases. He plays a furious non-stop 30 minute set leaving you a big sweaty mess, Pitchfork.tv graciously posted his entire set at Cake Shop during CMJ last year. We’ll definitely be checking him next week as he plays two shows in town, tickets are still on sale for both.

If you’re catching the Europa show in Greenpoint, The Habitat just opened a few blocks away on Manhattan Ave. with a 2-for-1 happy hour and cheap mac and cheese.

No computers, no pyramids. Bangalter’s killing it on straight hardware!

Indietronic Brooklyn

Yacht
Yacht, Dan Deacon, and Tapes n Tapes descend on Brooklyn this week to give you a dose of high pitch synth squeals and rumbling guitar riffs.

Yacht kicks it off Wednesday night at Studio B. Have a question ready he likes to Q&A mid show. Are you having a good time?

Dan Deacon will be at the Ridgewood Temple on Bushwick, Thursday. Yet another show at Temple… pattern forming here.

and Tapes n Tapes step it up at Music Hall of Williamsburg Saturday night.

Matt & Kim Played Three Shows Over the Weekend

Matt & Kim played some homecoming shows over the weekend with Team Robespierre at SUNY Purchase’s Zombie Prom on Friday 4/4, Pratt on Saturday 4/5 and an afterparty at Lost and Found (Lulu’s) in Greenpoint. We caught the Pratt show which took place in a big, seated theater. Had potential to be really weird but turned out just as good although we were getting yelled at by school security throughout most of the show.

More pictures are posted on Flickr via thepiratehat and reccabecca24.

Modeselektor, Pan-Pot, and Matthew Dear wreck NYC

Modeselektor is coming to FUN at Studio B on Friday March 21st, 2008. We don’t have much to say past that. PS If you’re not impressed by the above video why are you reading this blog?

On Saturday March 22nd, 2008 Minimoo presents Pan-Pot, Memek, and Maxi Stamm. Seriously, does Miss Moo ever stop? We’re hitting up her event in Miami for WMC next week, and we hear she’s throwing an event in London 2 weeks after!

MP3: Pan-Pot - Ibiza Voice Podcast 11/14/2007

and to round out this insane electronic weekend, Beyond Booking continues to absolutely KILL it with The Bunker’s Spectral Residency on April 4th, 2008 featuring two of our favorite djs Matthew Dear and Derek Plasaiko keeping us out all night long. Check out both of their excellent 2008 sets:

El Guincho at Union Pool

As the perfect way to decompress after three days of St. Patty’s celebrations, Other Music is throwing a free show tomorrow night with El Guincho from Barcelona, Spain. They have a refreshing Tropicalia influence and have been making the blog rounds with a Band to Watch profile on Stereogum, a Best New Music tag from Pitchfork and they created a mix for The Fader. Be sure to get there early, Union Pool’s stage is in a tight room and this is sure to be packed.

Matthew Rodriguez at Rare Gallery

Matthew Rodriguez Rare Gallery

Wooster reminded us we never mentioned Matthew Rodriguez’s show “Scruffy Kitty” at Rare Gallery. You’ve probably seen Matthew’s frowny faces on buildings, fire hydrants and garbage cans in your neighborhood.

In his solo debut at RARE, Austin, Texas-based artist Matthew Rodriguez presents new collages, paintings, objects, and photographs that combine the sweetness of a grade-schooler’s homemade valentines with the diary doodles of a playground bully between shakedowns.

“Scruffy Kitty” is on display until Saturday, March 8th at Rare Gallery.

MSTRKRFT Returns to Studio B

The MSTRKRFT boys are back in town this Friday at Studio B and they’re bringing reinforcements in the form of L.A. Riots, The Bloody Beetroots, and friend of Obscene Lazaro Casanova. Laz also runs a sweet mp3 blog - Shot Callin’ - it’s one of our favorites.

We’ve collectively seen MSTRKRFT half a dozen times and they’ve yet to let us down. They smashed up Studio B proper during last year’s CMJ Music Marathon, playing well past 4am to a packed and rowdy dancefloor.

Pre-sale tickets are sold out, so make sure you get to Studio B early on Friday to avoid those epic late-night lines.

Dinner and a Trip, Eyewash Anaglyph at Monkeytown

EyewashDinner and a movie is dated. If you want to show your girl who wears the way-too-tight pants in the house a good time, take her to EyeWash Friday night, March 7th.

Now in it’s fifth year; EyeWash has a been the premiere venue for video artists in New York. It’s hosted by MonkeyTown, and you’d swear the place was built for it. Four massive walls with projections going off while you’re sipping drinks in the middle. Couple that with a great dinner in the front room and it’s as avant-garde as first dates get. As an added bonus there’s now a sign outside telling you where it is. And for this night only it’s 3D, yep three-d.

MoMA Opening - Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today

Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today

The MoMA is opening up a new exhibit: Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today. The exhibition features work from forty artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.

There are several events running throughout the showing, including a sold out DFA party (we hate you!), panel discussions, and lunchtime lectures. View all of Color Chart’s related events.

The exhibit runs from March 2 to May 12th. Admission is a little steep at 20$ for an adult ticket, but if you’re BROKE you can get in for free courtesy of Target’s Free Friday Nights which run from 4pm to 8pm. Target’s Free Fridays tend to be packed though, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Henry Rollins Spoken Word at Warsaw

Ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins will be doing two nights of his new spoken word show, Provoked, at Warsaw in Greenpoint. The shows start at 7PM on Wednesday and Thursday night.

Henry has been doing spoken word for years now, in addition to fronting Black Flag and Rollins Band, acting, and generally getting things the fuck done. We’re huge fans of his spoken word material which is at once hilarious, touching, and thought-provoking.

To avoid Ticketmaster’s “convenience” charges, hit up the box office at Warsaw or Irving Plaza or Earwax Records in Williamsburg.

Matmos Plays Two Shows Saturday

One of our favorite experimental electronic acts Matmos is playing back-to-back sets (8PM & 10 PM) on Saturday at The Stone in the East Village. Tickets are $10 and you might want to get there early since there are no advance tickets available. The XLR8R video above documents the groups move from San Francisco to Baltimore. Hopefully we get to see some more of them now that they’re close by.
