Early October Film Alert
Wild Combination
Wild Combination is a movie about Arthur Russell, a prolific member of the Downtown 80s Rock and Disco scene. We’ve had friends on both coasts rave about how incredible this documentary is. The documentary is screening at IFC until October 9th.
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are screening at the Film Forum until next Tuesday. Why should you care? You should care because this screening is of a fully restored, retouched, unscratched, and clean version destined for Blu-Ray.
From The NYT:
The final product, which the studio is calling “The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration,” combines bits and pieces of film recovered from innumerable sources, scanned at high resolution and then retouched frame by frame to remove dirt and scratches. The color was brought back to its original values by comparing it with first-generation release prints and by extensive consultation with Gordon Willis, who shot all three films, and Allen Daviau, a cinematographer (”E.T.”) who is also a leading historian of photographic technology.
There is a really good analysis of the digital restoration techniques available on Slate. You can thank Kottke for the heads up.
